Ok, I know this subject has been touched upon before, but wanted everyone's input. I've tried the rabbit ear approach to run the engine in the driveway, but the water intake appears to be right on the edge of the outdrive so I can't get the old rabbit method to seal tightly around the intake slots. So, the next step was the old outdrive in a big bucket approach. Via this method, I've concluded that the impeller can't take in any water. The impeller appears new. If've take the hoses off on the inside of the engine, and let it take in water from a bucket, via this method, it takes in water just fine, engine runs cool (130 or so). Is this just the law of gravity, that is, the water is just to low to take in? The water is about an inch or so above the intake slots, or have I just proven that I possibly have air leaks in the outdrive somewhere? Obviously when the boat is in the water, the water will be much higher. This is also my next step, to put it in the water and simply see what happens, just have to get a few other things fixed first :)

Put it in the water. I had one once that leaked air right at the pivot point for steering. Since the water tube is the middle of the steering pivot, it relied on a few seals that spun. The boat would stay cool going slow as water was covering these seals, but on plane it would heat up due to the seals being out of the water and sucking air. The drive is a big straw and the way i test them for leaks is to remove the intake hose off the impellar pump, hook a garden hose to it, and seal the water intake on the bottom of the drive with some duct tape. This forces water out anywhere it would otherwise suck air in. Don't go overboard and blow seals up tho...

What Mike said, you've got a leak (sucking air) from the steering pivot water tube or the 's' shaped water hose. I run mine in a tub with only an inch or two above the intake vents with no problems.

In regard to the rabbit ears, its o/k for water to leak out the sides, they are not a perfect seal.

Aldo
