Daft question.

Took the distributor off my engine and my son took the guide bush out of the screw slot without noting what way up it went !!

Anyone tell me for sure which way it goes ??

Lug with the part number stamped on it to the top or the bottom ??

Don't want to put the timing out

Many thanks.

Not sure what you are referring to by "took the guide bush out of the screw slot", nor what this "Lug" is. Can you post a picture of these parts?

Assuming it's just the distributor rotor and timing, the first thing you have to do is get the engine up to #1 TDC on the Compression Stroke not the exhaust stroke. You can do that like this HOW TO: Find #1 TDC on the compression stroke.?/ 427081

Then you install the distributor with the rotor pointing to #1 spark plug wire on the cap. (you may have to turn the oil pump a bit to line up with the distributor shaft.
Once you get it running, you will need to set the timing with a timing light to the proper specs.

Re: Aq171c

Hi Don,

Will take pictures of the dizzy and the guide bush when I am up at the boat next weekend and post them. I will also give you the part number of the plastic guide bush.

In the meantime, here is a pdf of the page of the Volvo workshop manual showing a picture of the dizzy and specifically mentioning the guide bush.

Regards,

Doug

Just realized, the 171 doesn't use a standard distributor like the other Volvo 4 cyl engines of that era, you have the Renix electronic ignition system. I can't help you with it at all, never even seen one before. Seen it in the manual, but never worked on one.
