I was reading a previous thread on rubber band motors and it raised a few questions on my own set-up,which is a 1984 AQ200D with a 280T drive.I'll ask all the questions up front and any answers are greatly appreciated. 1 Does rubber band refer to the timing belt and if so should that belt be changed as part of preventive maintanence? 2 What is involved in doing this? 3 I was thinking of changing the distributer cap, rotor and points.Any tips on doing the points as its my first time or is changing over to electronic ignition something to consider. What are the pros and cons of each? This boat is new to me as of one year ago and has run great all season but I dont know when any of these items have been changed. The distributer cap has volvo penta written on its side and looks like it might be original!!as did the wires I changed at the beginning of the season.I just want to say thanks to everyone out there for all the great info I have gotten just by reading thru all the old posts.I think I,m addicted!

First of all, you don't have a "rubber band" engine that was the nickname for the Volvo 4 cylinder engine with the timing belt.
An AQ200D is a Chevy 350
If you have never done points or a tuneup before, find someone that has for help, and get a service manual before you even start.

Re: AQ200D-rubber band motor?/and other questions

Thanks for the reply Don S.MY question was poorly worded.I'm aware that I have a chevy block,305 I think, thought maybe some years had a rubber timing belt that needed attention.I am comfortable doing basic maintenence, oil changes, cap and rotor type things but dont have any experience with pionts and was wondering if electronic ign. is a good way to go. Lastly,I do have a manual, clymer I think, but its on the boat which is 60 miles from here.I will winterize this weekend and was trying to get a heads up on a few other things I might have time to do.Thanks to all as always for any input

I wouldn't tune it up right now, no since fogging an engine with new spark plugs and having them sit all winter with oil on them. Points same thing, once they have been run (even for a few minutes) they will corrode much quicker. And sitting unused all winter isn't the best thing for them.
Do your tuneup in the spring, then you will know you will have minimum problems during the season.
