I have been messing with my Bayliner and have found that I have corrosion on both my outdrive and the steering helmet. I have picked up a replacement outdrive that is not corroded on the outside, but the inside is all messed up. I plan on swapping some parts from each and making one good outdrive. There are some differences with the two outdrives but I have the transom shield and all parts, someone just cut the thing off the boat at the transom.
I am thinkin I can take the single bolt outdrive upper gear box and associated steering fork and swap it to the one on my boat now, taking care of the corrosion there. I am having a hard time with getting the forks off of the transom shield, I figure some heat and some persuasion with a mallet should do the trick. Are the two arms the same shaft diameter? I would really like to be able to rebuild the one drive, put it on the boat and just junk the one with the corroded case.I did get the pins out of the lift fork and remove the drive from the transom shield, that was a pain! Also while I am doing this I thought a new prop might benefit me for power, any ideas on that? It seems all of the 270's I have ever seen have the old clover looking prop not the modern style. Either way I think I can get all the parts I need and at least put one good drive together and mount it on my boat for this spring.
