I have been messing with my Bayliner and have found that I have corrosion on both my outdrive and the steering helmet. I have picked up a replacement outdrive that is not corroded on the outside, but the inside is all messed up. I plan on swapping some parts from each and making one good outdrive. There are some differences with the two outdrives but I have the transom shield and all parts, someone just cut the thing off the boat at the transom.

I am thinkin I can take the single bolt outdrive upper gear box and associated steering fork and swap it to the one on my boat now, taking care of the corrosion there. I am having a hard time with getting the forks off of the transom shield, I figure some heat and some persuasion with a mallet should do the trick. Are the two arms the same shaft diameter? I would really like to be able to rebuild the one drive, put it on the boat and just junk the one with the corroded case.I did get the pins out of the lift fork and remove the drive from the transom shield, that was a pain! Also while I am doing this I thought a new prop might benefit me for power, any ideas on that? It seems all of the 270's I have ever seen have the old clover looking prop not the modern style. Either way I think I can get all the parts I need and at least put one good drive together and mount it on my boat for this spring.

If only it were that easy...

Unfortunately, You can't just swap parts, housings, etc, without reshimming everything.

How bad is the original outdrive?

Just cuz its corroded, doesn't mean its not usable.

I will take photos of the out drive next time o have it out. As I disassemble the outdrive not on the boat I have found corrosion on a lot of the parts but nothing that is pitted. I will take photos tonight and maybe if they are ok I can just clean treat and out it back together and install it as one piece

unfortunately I have to put the outdrive off for a bit, have some other projects that are eating up my time. I will get back to it after the holidays and hopefully be able to dive right into it. I have seen in the manual how to pull the tube and I have a press so that will be the first thing I do when I get back at it. I expect to reseal this thing, maybe a new bearing or two and maybe put it right back on the back of my boat and keep boating. We will see. I will update this when I get the chance to get back to work on the boat.
