Hello I'm rebuilding my out drive and the prop gear has 31 teeth and the pinion has 20 so I divided 31 by 20 and get 1.55 gear ratio is this right? but on the prop housing its stamped 1.61? just want to know if these gears have been changed or not.

I turned the prop one full turn before dissembling and the drive shaft looks to me like it turns 1.61 revolutions.

Re: AQ280 Gear Ratio

The 1.61 gear ratio is a combination of the lower and the upper. Not just lower.

I always thought It was in the lower... was I misinformed? If I turn the vertical shaft in the lower just over 2 times to spin the prop shaft once that would be a 2.3:1 ratio right?

Gear ratio's are changed by different gears in the lower, but the upper is not 1-1 on the gear ratio.

Thanks Don. Never know that. Can you canfirm the way I checked my lower is correct? Mine has 2.3 stamped on the bearing housing. But just under where the lower meets the intermediate it has 1 95 stamped twice (defenatly not original factory). Just want to make sure before I re-sell it.
