Are any of these motors worth trying to get running or do i have a couple of anchors?

Greetings,

I aquired 2 outboard motors when i bought my boat ( the boat i think is headed to a date at the dump:( ) and i'm trying to decide whether or not to include them in the run to the dump or see if one of them is worth putting some time into to have a motor ready and waiting when i find a boat worth keeping.

The First one is a 1969 55 HP Evinrude. This one probably is headed to the scrap heap, as mice decided it would be a wonderful place to make nests and babies in with all that wonderful wiring it has. I guess the only question i have is there any parts worth pulling off to sell? Here are 2 general pics, if you want me to take a pic of something specific, please let me know.

The second motor i have is a 1972 65HP Johnson. It's complete, and i think this one might be worthwhile to do at least a compression check to see if the motor is any good, but if i decide to get into this motor, can i get parts for it? is it even worthwhile? Or, as with the evinrude, should i rob some parts off of it and let it follow the same fate?

Any input regarding these motors is really appriciated and you have my thanks in advance. :) I look forward to hearing from you soon.

imho, both those motors look to be in great shape. if they have good compression and you like to tinker, both may be keepers, or fixer uppers for sale. fixing the mouse chewed wires may not be a big issue, as long as nothing got chewed off flush with any of the hard to find/expensive components. just dont sell them for scrap....because as soon as you do, you will hear of someone looking for a part you had!

There are plenty of guys that would give you something for them, so don't just throw them away. Is that a SST (Stainless Steel, Teflon coated) propeller on the 55? That is worth more than a few bucks.

I'd part them out LONG before scrapping them. Put that's just me.

Both of them are from the electric shift family so not as desirable because of parts availability.....provided that and they both shift okay and check out in other areas already mentioned they are probably both worth the effort.

But they ARE desirable as parts motors!

I'm dumping my 1972 Johnny 65hp the first chance I get and it's running....

All well and good.....im thinking the OP needs to salvage something from a rotted glasser though.....unless he parts them out (time consuming) they are going to net a reasonable sum as running units.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the sound advice. I'm gonna go and see what exactly i got in these motors and hope that they are worth repairing. I've found some plans for a motor stand and ordered a OEM manual for the Johnson. I guess the first thing to do would be to hook up the battery and controls and do a compression test?? Any advice is allways welcome.

Thanks,
Jeff

Greeting everyone,
Ok, I got the 72 65 HP Johnson up on a boat stand and started going through the manual to get her running. The end result of all this is 2 issues. 1. The motor is stuck in forward, and after going through the manual, it looks like the solinoid is shot. 2. Got the motor running, let her warm up for about 10 min, then did a compression test. Got 90,90 and 30  So, now i'm looking for opinions from you experts.:D Is this motor worth rebuilding the powerhead, how difficult is it for a newb to rebuild a powerhead, and trying to find that solinoid thats like trying to pull teeth:eek:, or would you sell it as a parts unit and what would you ask for it? Thanks for your advice in advance.:)

It might be fixable, alot depends on the condition of the bores but it would probably end up being pricey.....with the shift issue on top you might be better off parting that one out and moving on to the next candidate.....in its current condition it wouldnt fetch much here, 100 bucks or so on a good day, probably much the same there, you can always try for more though.

Ground the spark plugs while doing the compression test.

It will be stuck in foward till it starts and builds pump pressure and iit has to have the controlbox hooked up or jumper on shift wires... throw that dang clymer manual away
