Re: Are "BigFoot" Labeled On The Outboard?

'Bigfoot' refers to the size of the gearbox. A 'Bigfoot' engine has the gearbox of the next size class up on it....

Why would you hope you don't have a Bigfoot? If the engine is on anything but a small boat (for the engine size) then having a Bigfoot is an advantage, not something bad....

If you're not sure, just post up a photo of your engine (all of it) and we'll tell you.

Or the engine serial number might help tell the story.

Merc don't put model numbers on the ID plate, only the serial number. Johnrudes don't have bigfoots (bigfeet???)....

It is a relatively small boat to me.
It's a Lowe FM165. The boat and motor is 2005.
What I'm confused about is the manual.

In the maintenance page, it shows the diagram with the 2 vent gear case lub holes to be the 108 mm diameter gearcase. Which has a gear ratio of 2.33:1.

Which I believe is the "BigFoot" model.

Now as you can see, my lower unit does have 2 vent plugs. But it has a sticker showing it's 1.82:1 ratio. Also, the motor sticker shows the weight of the standard model, 246lbs.

The BigFoot is suppose to be about 260lbs.

So I dont get it...

PS, I changed the prop out for the one see in the picture. It originally was a 10x17P prop.

Now it has a 10 5/8x12P prop. I was hoping I didnt make a mistake.

Agreed -- you do have a standard engine. For anyone else trying to determine whether they have a BigFoot or not, the words BigFoot generally appears on the engine. The label on the gear case shows the gear ratio (1.83:1 is standard and 2.33:1 is a BigFoot). If the labels are gone or if the cowl has been swapped, it is simple to tell which ratio you have. Remove the cowl. Use felt pen and place a mark on one of the flywheel teeth and then another mark on on the engine adjacent to the first mark. Now do the same on the prop blade and the prop housing. With the engine in forward gear, manually, rotate the engine 1.83 times (just short of two full revolutions). If you have a standard lower unit the prop will have turned exactly one revolution. If it is not lined up on the marks you made continue turning the flywheel until it has turned 2.33 times (or about 1/2 additional turn). If the prop marks now line up you have a Big Foot lower unit.
