Are marine cooler seat the same as regular coolers?

My question is are cooler seat cooler stronger or more durable or stronger than regular coolers?
I am thinking about replacing the original cooler type seat in my classic mako. As I looked I noticed the price of regular igloo coolers and mount and cushions you snap on them are actually cheaper than buying the unit altogether.

The marine version is ignition-protected so you can mount it in the engine compartment without fear of an explosion.:D

This a case win which a literal seat-of-the-pants evaluation is the best way to determine if the regular cooler is sturdy enough.

I've had a cooler with a seat for the past 6 - 7 years. I have a small boat so it worked out really great. Eventually the snaps on the cushion (where it connects to the cooler) gave it up. I'll probably replace both the cooler and the cushion next season. It's become an integral part of the boat. Not exactly the information you were looking for, but.....

No, they must be Coast Guard approved to withstand the force of six exploding Coke cans. They must also be capable of removing a great deal more money from your wallet, when you buy them.

I've stood on several of my "normal" Coleman 5-day coolers and didn't feel them flexing, so as long as you get a good one, you should be safe sitting on them.

Do this, (prefaced by, hold my beer) walk into WalMart, snatch a cooler off the shelf, start jumping on it like a gorilla, it if passes the test, buy it. If it doesn't pass the test and you crash through the lid, select another cooler and test it out until you find one that holds up, buy that one. Hopefully your first cooler holds up as the "associates" will call the cops and/or rubber wagon after the second failed cooler... :D

One trick to stiffen up the lid of a cooler, if you want to use it as a seat, is to fill it with the foam sealer that you can buy at the big box home improvement stores.

Drill a few holes in the sides of the lid and stick the nozzle on the can in them, one at a time. Don't try to put too much in at once, because the outside areas have a tendency to exapnd first, leaving the stuff in liquid format in the middle. You can also drill a few hole in the bottom of the lid and fill with the lid, in the upside down position.

If you inject the foam correctly, you will have even expansion and will fill the open area in the lid well. This will make the lid suitable for use as a seat and will improve the insulating properties of the cooler a great deal.

Isn't it against USCG regs to introduce any equipment into a boat that doesn't say 'marine'. AYBC? OK, at least California ...

I can't say that I know every USCG reg or standard, but I'm kinda thinkin' that they don't regulate coolers.
