I'm thinking of trading my early 90's 2 stroke for a larger newer model. Are the newer mercs or yamaha 2 strokes quieter than the older ones? Or should I be looking at 4 strokes?

Traditionally 2 strokes were not as quiet as the 4-strokes. Evinrude E-TEC changed all that and are as quiet and sometimes quieter than equivalent 4-strokes at cruising and at wide open throttle.

Other 2-stroke brands are not near as quiet.

Yamaha is no longer selling 2-strokes in the US for 2010.

I ran a yamaha two stroke 10hp motor last year. It was a pretty quiet motor. I'm not sure how quiet you are looking for, but in all honesty, I run old OMC motors and they are actually relatively "quiet" for the years.

Nope. I tested the V6 E-Tecs in the Keys and the 4-strokes were much quieter. BUT, I would take an E-Tec over any 4-stroke ANY day.

Re: Are new 2 strokes quieter?

All 2 strokes: My 2003 150 Yam is a little quieter than my 2002 (?) 50 Yam and both are a lot quieter than my 1988 Johnson 70. My 1972 Merc 20 is the loudest. Talking about running, not idling; the 2 Yamaha's are about the same then.

Well the last 2 would be if they were running right now they are WAY too quiet!
