I have a 1974 Johnson 50 with an electric choke that doesn't seem to work...Is it worth replacing the solenoid and fixing these?...or is the worst thing that can happen if I dont is a slight inconvenience of walking to the back of the boat and manually operating the choke? The solenoid is 50 bucks...used!

I have a 1973 85 HP Evinrude with an electric choke solenoid..in my experience, I need to "manipulate" (turn on and off) the choke when cranking the engine and also for a minute or two after it starts to keep it running. I would spend the bucks to replace it.

Yeah, that's the price for convenience. If it's a good starting motor, you probably only have to choke it for a second when cold, and after that you won't need the choke anyway. My 35hp Lark has the electric choke and I only have to touch it when cold to get it started. After that, I don't use it. It is convenient to just have to push the button rather than having to manually choke it.

Find out exactly what's wrong with it. Those solenoids don't tend to wear out much - pretty simple system. Check your wiring and make sure you've got 12V at the purple wire on the solenoid.
