Are Seal Conditioners ever used in T/T systems?

Hi,

I have a 1977 Merc 850 with the external T/T pump. It has all original seals that don't seem to be leaking.

A few years back I had the pleasure of using a product for the automatic transmission in my old Ford. It's purpose was to soften and re-juvinate the seals. It was called Trans-X, and it really worked wonders. Most "mechanics in a can" are worthless...but that product did everything that was claimed for it.

I'm wondering if there are any products made for use in my Merc and similiar?

I suppose that since my seals aren't leaking that I should leave well enough alone; but since I'm starting to use the engine now...maybe some preventative maintenance is in order?

Thanks for reading, Chuck

Anything that causes a seal to swell can't be good for them in the long run. If they leak just get the kit and rebuild them. It took less than a day when I did mine.

Dingbat is right, most oils of different kinds have a small bit of seal conditioners added anyway.

The products that are marketed to soften seals and stop leaks will in fact do just that, however it comes at a price. They soften them too much and they start to desolve causing huge leaks. Its not a preventative maintenance thing to do.

I have rebuilt both and I recomend if the pump isnt leaking than leave it alone :p There are only 6 small O-rings in the pump and its an easy job.
The cylenders are a little more tricky but not too bad either ... There is a special merc tool to install the slipper seal in the cylinders but you dont need it if you have a dremmel ... If you decide to go this route I can explain the procedure...
Jon

I have the 3 cylinder integral pump assembly on mine. I rebuilt all 3 cylinders but there is nothing you can do with the pump other than to replace the o-ring in the base. The rebuild helped tremendously but I still leak down over time.

In hind sight I should have taken the pump apart and found replacement o-rings for the flow control valve in the pump head. They where suspect when I looked at them and there is no rebuild kit available from Merc for anymore so I just left well enough alone. I should have taken the old o-rings out and found a suitable replacement at my local industrial supply house.
