Are Sierra International parts any good?

Hey guys,

I need to replace the starter solenoid on my 4.3. I broke off one of the connector posts when I was removing the nut due to rust. I was wondering if anyone had bought any replacement parts from Sierra? If so what are your thoughts? I know OEM is recommended for replacements or repairs but I don't really want to fork out $115 plus shipping for a mercruiser/quicksilver solenoid. Anyone got any reviews?

Thanks and ~Happy Boating~

Ayuh,... I use alota Sierra parts,...
For shift cables I go Oem,...
Most everything else is Sierra...

Btw,... I'd replace the Whole starter, as the starter is probably as rusted as the solenoid...

starter solenoid is a sealed part by design so could use any automotive solenoid on that starter.
Every one I have seen is gasketed on the bakelite cap where it meets the coil. The coil is sealed.

The non marine starters sparking issue is the brushes. and where the end gear opens up it can let gas fumes into the starter motor where the brushes are sparking.

Not true, automotive solenoids are missing one of the small terminals needed on marine engines to operate the electric fuel pump.

ok some are missing it but some do have the 'R' terminal which is originally meant to go to the coil to give extra power when cranking.

And you can tap off the lug running to the brush holder, that bolt which connects the output of the solenoid to the brush assembly.

Not without adding a diode or something to stop back-feed

Thanks for the help guys... I ordered the 24.99 one off of iBoats... (I know I'm a cheap bastard but after spending over a G on the motor rebuild... it seemed better than 75).
