I recommend a plasma cutter. It will take it apart very quickly.

Sorry - I have the shop manual and it talks about all kinds of special tools. I need to put in a new reverse gear. So it needs to come apart. Lots of shop manuals talk about special tools that aren't really necessary. Is that the case here or am I going to be stuck? 1993 40 horse Evinrude.

Sorry, that is too new for me. For all I knew, you may have been talking about an old Electramatic 40 that does require special tools.

Why are you just replacing the reverse gear? That's usually the low one on the totem pole when doing gear case work. Something else wrong ?
