are the wires right?

I was given this outboard which has been guessed to be a 1967 by the forum gurus and I hope to make it run. The problem for today is that I can't get spark. The previous owner installed an electric starter (or reinstalled) and I am not sure if everything is correct. If you follow the link below, you can see where he connected wires to the motor and to three switches on the side of the housing. There is a rough drawing of how the three switches are hooked up. They leave the page in the same order as they connect to the motor in the picture left to right. Sorry if that is confusing.

When I hook everything up, the starter works, spinning the flywheel, and compression is good, but no spark on the plugs. I also included a picture of the points, which I think may have been replaced at some point. Any insight on that?

THANKS!!!

The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to get rid of that mess the previous owner rigged and return the circuitry to its rightful setup. You'll need to find a wiring diagram to do that BUT it is the only way to go.

Re: are the wires right?

I suspect you may be confused by the RUN switch. The diagram shows the RUN switch in the RUN position (the switch needs to have its contacts open). If you have that switch closed, the ignition is killed and you would have no spark. Although this is a rather crude adaptation of electric start, it should work fine. The bad part is there "start in gear protection" so if the throttle were open fairly far and the engine was in gear, you could be pitched overboard and dealing with a runaway boat.

Yeah, I actually tried it both ways (open and closed) with identical results. Any other ideas?
