Are there any states that don't require any paperwork on a boat to get title?

We bought a boat off a neighbor and he lied about having a title. I told him the last two owners didn't have any paperwork. He might send me a bill of sale if the minister tells him to do so. These last two guys haven't cooperated that I know of and I don't expect much now.

This boat has never been transferred in the last 10 years and the last owner is worried someone will come back for a registration, even though I told him about the minister giving it way to another party. He isn't worried about being liable when the boat is out there somewhere. I'd think he would want to get his name off it. Guess not.

The boat was last registered in Mississippi and a contact with the state said sometime other paperwork can be gotten without the old title etc.

Is there a state that does this? These laws are entirely too complicated.

Thanks

A. Pick up a collector car magazine, there are always places you can buy titles for in there.

B. Wisconsin and a lot of other state only require a bill of sale for a boat title. This is handled through the DNR

see http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/cs/apps/9400193.pdf

maybe you can do this even if out of state

http://dnr.wi.gov/org/caer/cs/registrations/wivrs/ this was the online form.

sorry I do not know how to link so you will have to type the address

yup here in GA all you need is a bill of sale and the previous owners registration card.

i didnt even have the card cause the baot hadent been registered since '02
i had to write an affidavit saying that i didnt think the boat was stolen and that i knew that the previous owner never registered it.

everythign goes through the Dpt of natural resources.

your state my be different...

if you have to deal with the tag office i have sympathy for you.

peace be with you brother. GOOD LUCK

Too late this time, but a reminder for everyone else.

No paperwork = no money

Agree with no paper work = no money. I live in georgia and have a good friend who bought a used sea ray run about. Got a bill of sale, transfered registration with DNR. A month or so later, the boat was stolen, or so he thougth. After a brief investiagtion, the local sheriff said the boat had not been stolen, but repossessed. Turned into a major hassle, first my friend had to pay the bank note to get the boat back and then had to try and extract the monies from the guy who sold him the boat. Since he had nothing, it did little good to sue him or have him arrested, the guy eventually paid my friend back a little cash before he vanished.

Today the minister who got the boat last said he did register it in MS. My contact at MS F&G said his name wasn't listed. So last listed owner said he would send me a Bill of Sale.

So what happened to that registration?

That's a good point about a lein. Should I check the boat registration people to find out? There isn't anything on the transfer papers about leins.

Your insurance company can likely find out if it has a lien based on the HIN. I'm willing to bet no bank lets a loan get out without a title.

Ok, lets say it doesn't have anything to do with a loan on the boat. I'm thinking that anyone owed money can place a lein on a any or all possessions of the debtor. That complicates things further.
