yes, all stringer intermediates contain water shutters. two in V6 and V8 applications. Port side only on inline 4 and 6.

Howard please, show me in this diagram where the shutter, flapper whatever you want to call it is? Click on the link.

This is a 1985, in the diagram, 86' has a flapper. My boat has no flapper. Never had a flapper.

And every stringer don't have a flapper.

Just like every merc don't have a flapper.

The donor boat i just got had one broken off found it after we pulled the drive.

Probably was in the drive for years clogging the exhaust. And the owner couldn't figure out why he was running hot.

Maybe thats why i got the boat cheap, cheap ,cheap, and all i wanted was the motor.

shouldn't be stikin. If it is, just rev the engine, the exhaust will push it open.

"a fool won't heed it" eh...

Re: Are there exhaust flappers in OMC stringers?

Time to stop the name calling.
Chief, I think what Howard meant is that all stringers SHOULD have one (or two). If you notice, in your link above, that item #81 is called an Exhaust Seal AY. (aka flapper)
Now, if you go to the stringer drive and look under adapter housing (here is an example) http://www.dougrussell.com/partscat...6,237,238,239,240,241,242,243,244,245,246,247

You will find that item #42 is called an Exhaust Seal AY
That "Exhaust Seal" is not in the intermediate housing, but in the adapter housing.

Well he started it, so there.

Anyway thats not what he posted, he posted they all have them.

What motor and year you pull that up from?

For 85' they don't show one, and my motor doesn't have one.

And i know guys have the 86' 3.0 Cobra and it shows the flapper in the diagram but not installed on there boat.

Alot of times you will see on a diagram flappers, but they were never installed on boats.

And i with my own 2 eyes saw a original stringer on a 1987 walkaround.

Was a 800. Talked with the guy who owned it. Bought it brand new, and would not change for a new boat ever.

Don and Howard are both correct, the links they show is the Stringer version of the exhaust flapper, the link that Chief showed is for a Cobra where it's in the exhaust pipe or the Y pipe on a V model. All Stringers would have come from the factory with it just like the Cobra's.

Actually, I think you did. After all, it is the last 5 words of your signature he was quoting.

What motor and year you pull that up from?

I used a 1985 5.7. But the 3.0 shows the same exact thing.
Go HERE
Choose the engine you want then click on "Adapter Housing & Shift Assy" (It's the first on the list so it should be easy to find)

And i know guys have the 86' 3.0 Cobra and it shows the flapper in the diagram but not installed on there boat.

Even the Cobra's had flappers installed originally, and again since 86 they may have fallen out or not installed during some maintenance, but they were there when new. Or at least should have been.

your boat had one originally.

Might be a good idea to pull the riser and poke a screwdriver down the exhaust port and see if it's still in tact.

if you pull the screwdriver out quickly, you'll hear it slam shut with a dull thud if the rubber is still good

Re: Are there exhaust flappers in OMC stringers?

Maybe it should have come with it.

Mine didn't, had the motor out 3 times, last time i installed the 140 merc.

I had full access to the tube and intermediate was no provision for it.

Was not setup for it.

I spent about 45 minutes going over the entire bilge area adapter everything.

I shone a light down the tube.

Re: Are there exhaust flappers in OMC stringers?

I did some work on boats with omc drives for friends that bought them new.

And they still have them.

They are latter models 85'-86' models.

All stringers i'm talking about.

When they discontinued the stringer models, they was alot of stock.

Towards the end they were throwing all kinds of different stuff in boats.

Mine is a 86' boat. 85' drive and motor.

But alot of the stuff is 86 tubes and such.

I am positively, positive, beyond all doubt, there is not flapper in the tube, adapter housing.

Now for past models probably are.

The 85' 140 merc in the boat now had one in the donor boat.

Clogging the out drive.

Should have come from dealer installed mine didn't.

I went out in the rain after all this posting, crawled under the tarp and took my flashlight with me.

No provision for it.
