Are Thermostats to blame?

My 1995 V4 Johnson 90hp was overheating the other day while I had her in idle running through a hose. The overheat alarm sounded for about 10 secs and then shut off and didnt come back on. I noticed that she was "peeing" well however there was not any water coming out of the two holes located on the back side of the engine just below the cowling. Does this mean that my thermostats aren't working properly or could it be that I have a blockage someplace? How can I tell if the thermostats are functioning properly? Any help will be appreciated.

Re: Are Thermostats to blame?

Take it to the lake and run it at idle there, it may have just been an issue with how the muffs were connected. Watch it close and be ready to shut it off if it shows any sign of getting too warm.

PS.
My first question should have been...
Has it done this before, or was this a one time deal and when was the last time the stats and water pump were changed?

Re: Are Thermostats to blame?

Thanks for the replys. I will repost with the temperature readings for the heads. As for your questions ondarvr, the thermostats and water pump havnt been replaced in three years (end of season 2005). I know its about time that they be replaced so I am going to be doing it shortly. It will be my first attempt to replace them on my own so if you guys have any tips that would be great. I ordered a manual so that should help with the process. I am just wondering if this maintenance is something that can be done by an amatuer alone. I'd hate to get in over my head. Thanks
