Hello group,

I have a 1975 Evinrude 70hp. A fellow locally has a 1979 Johnson 70hp for sale. Are most if not all the parts the same between these motors? I was going to buy it for parts. Never know it might be in better shape then mine. I will buy it anyway as the $150 he wants for it seems to be a steal! He is a marine tech who teaches a coarse locally and had it apart to check it out for the class. Tomorrow he will be putting it back together and starting it for the class. I've talked to him a number of times on the phone and he seems like a stand up guy. He said the bottom end is great, compression was good. Should be a good running motor when reassembled. But if for some reason it would be better used for parts just wanted to know what I will be able to swap out.

Thanks Again for everyones input.

Best Regards
Arnie

I kinda thought they were exactly the same. Those 70's were unchanged for darn near 15 years if I'm correct. (mid 70's to 90's)

Some significant differences...

First, the lower units are entirely different. They will swap, but not without some cobbling of parts due to their shift patterns being exactly opposite.

Second, the '79 would have the updated CDI ignition with the plastic black box powerpack. The '75 would have the metal box. They are not interchangeable. I'm pretty sure the '75 would have the skinny con-rods, too, while the '79 should have the beefier rods. They changed the cylinder head, too, to accept the coils in a different spot.

In my opinion the '79 is a much improved motor over the '75. Not that the '75 isn't a good motor, but the '79 has some significant refinement.

- Scott
