here is a picture of my rams. im trying to determine if they are the "old small prestolite" rams that require a high pressure high performance trim pump.
they have no markings at all, no part numbers, no words that i can see of any kind.
they are almost as big around as a beer can so i would hardly call them "small"

What's the horsepower and serial number of your engine? We can look up the details in the parts look up system and determine exactly what you have....

Chris......

Edit: I've had a really close look at that picture and something seems off... Can you give us a longer shot of the engine?

Re: are these prestolite rams?

i dont have the serial number for the engine at this exact minute, but i took the serial number to the mercury dealer and they got nothing except that the engine was one of the first ever v6 175 hp black max ever made. as in one of the first off the assembly line.

they couldnt even tell me definitely what year for sure it was manufactured. its titled as a 1980.. but that doesnt mean anything at all in NC because i think thats the year of the boat and it doesnt have a seperate title for engine.

they said that the engine went through some changes during its first run and if i dont have any numbers or name from the rams themselves then they could be either prestolite, mercury , or showa.

i can tell you this much.. it has a ton of power and makes the 18ft ranger bass boat skip across the water at about 78mph when the water is smooth. when the water is rough i tend to go much slower cause that thing will beat the snot out of you.
the guy at the shop said just to put a j1171 pump on it because if he had to guess he said it they were low pressure high volume rams because they were so big...
but he also said his computer and books do not have pictures on this particular engine and trim assembly so he cant really cross reference.

i think the serial number is something like 301004?

this same engine also came with a smaller single ram setup and the trim pump mounted outside next to the ram.. i think that is the prestolite set up. mine has the pump inside the boat.

i was hoping some one could tell me for sure just by looking.

Re: are these prestolite rams?

The first V6 175 was 1976. I have the manuals for it, but I don't see any 2 ram set ups. It could even be an aftermarket job. The serial number should have 7 digits, starting with a 4 if it's US built or a 7 if it's Canadian.

The J1171 is the marine rating. Doesn't say anything else about the pump. Does it have a square reservoir or a round one?

Is the system working or are you looking for help solving a problem?

The square pump is definitely Prestolite, low volume, high pressure.

Re: are these prestolite rams?

thanks guys.
incase anyone else needs this information here is what my research yielded:

the pump is a mercury part number is 67914A1
the rams are also mercury

thery are infact high pressure low volume, but NOT prestolite products.

the rams could actually be pumped up with a low pressure pump, HOWEVER - the pump has to have the internal check valve set up or your motor will just leak back down

so what does it all mean?

there are a couple pumps that could be substituted in this case but the correct replacement is a PT440n which is actually a volvo/penta motor/pump

if you happen to have a working pump but the motor is bad (like me)then you can purchase a standard PT440 (ABN or any derivitive) motor without the pump and insert your pump into the reservoir housing.

i ran accross several replacement pumps that will work however they are pricy. if you need both the motor and the pump then you can pick up the
PT440n (motor and pump package) for about 450 to 500 dollars.
you can get several high performance pumps and motors for the 600 and up range that will work.
but for me , since the pump works.. i can replace the motor and reservoir housing for 175 and insert my own pump.

Re: are these prestolite rams?

I assume the whole reason for this is because you can no longer get the parts you need from mercury?

Then I think you make this more difficult than needed. Just buy the 3w Volvo Penta AQ290 pump assembly for $200 and figure it out from there. It has both motor and pump so you don't need any other parts except a mounting bracket ... which your can make from a $5 piece of Ace hardware aluminum. It has four SAE standard ports using the exact same 3/16 inverted flare brake fittings that NAPA has hundreds of adapters for. It puts out 2000psi which has to be enough simply because you burst hoses and fittings if you go any higher. and there you go. Problem solved.
