Re: Are two skiis for learning or do ppl stay on 2??

My wife loves skiing on two b/c she's good at getting up and clowning around back there. She knows how to get up and ski on 1 and now I am patiently pushing her to get outside the wake.

Slalom skiing is sooooo much more fun. Cut deeper, hang on with one hand, throw a longer wake... it's a lot of fun.

Both my folks drop simply b/c it's easier on their bodies to get out of the water. I don't like the thought of losing a ski (done it once) or driving over the dropped ski (haven't done it yet, knock on wood.).

Re: Are two skiis for learning or do ppl stay on 2??

I finally got on ONE ski! I had to drop it but I followed some of the tips here and was able to feel comfortable enough to drop the 2nd, and balance enough to get my other foot in the back of the 1st ski.

It felt completely different - It felt very wobbly. I can definitely see how people say it turns better, because clearly, it does. I really need to figure out how to get up with just one, because leaving my 2nd ski (which is near brand new) makes me a little uncomfortable.

Just thought I'd share.

Congratulations !!!! Getting up on 1 is the next step. The more hole shot the boat has the better was what we found. I have 2 props. 1 for hole shot and 1 for general. We all learned on the hole shot prop and graduated from there to the other prop.

Great to hear - isn't it a great sense of acheivment that first time!
Next tip to get stable, lock back knee in behind the front one, keep both knees bent, and try to relax a bit, not keep trying to correct.

Deep water starts - the next challenge!

deep water start: you really need a double handled rope, it is a rope, that has a Y at the end, with 2 small handles, one for each hand. you put the tip of the ski in the Y, this helps keep you going straight, while breaking the surface. some people, put the back foot in the boot when getting up, other just tend to trail it behind them, to help balance. until the are on top of the water. again, you have to decide if you are left or right footed. you can ski on one ski all day with out putting the extra foot in the boot. once you learn to get the foot into the boot, you will learn you can do all kinds of sharp turns, actually pull the back of the boat around, and screw with the drivers, control.

Re: Are two skiis for learning or do ppl stay on 2??

Its finally too cold here to boat any more this season, so I'll have to wait until next year to really get and stay up on one ski.

I did manage to figure out how to drop a ski pretty successfully, but wasn't able to get up on just one... yet.

It really felt weird on one ski and didn't give me a whole lot of comfort/confidence. Maybe I'm just used to 2 now, but it felt more scary than it did fun on one... I guess I've just got to keep trying.

you are correct, we are use to being on 2 feet, and not having to balance. practice makes perfect. spend the winter, practicing, standing with one foot in front of the other. also take a short piece of 2 inch PVC shedule 40 pipe, and a 30 inch 1x8 of piece of plywood. set the board 90 degrees from the pipe, and then stand on it . this is great practice for balance. the kids will also love it. my niece has graduated to an 8 inch piece of pipe.

I'm 44 too. Had 4 or 5 sessions on 2 skis earlier this year before rushing out to buy a slalom.

Then had a very frustrating day in June trying to get up on the slalom without success. Nearly gave up, but then decided to have a lesson at a ski school who taught me to get up on a deep water start with both feet in the bindings in about 30 minutes, back in July. Best money I've spent in a long time.

Last weekend (now that the Aussie winter is over), got out in my boat with a couple of friends and spent 2 days out on a lake having a great time on the slalom. Sometimes it still takes me a couple of attempts to get up on the ski, but at least I know I'll get there. I should mention that every muscle in my upper body is still sore!

I reckon that double skis are a lot of fun, but a slalom better!
