I just looked at a bass boat with a 200 hp 1990 suzuki motor on it. Do these motors have a good reputation as far as durability go? This thing is a v6 with 12 spark plugs  , kind of reminds me of the old datsun engines. Any way, anyone here have an opninion on these motors?

The thing fired right up and I am suppossed to take it for a lake test tomorrow.

Suzuki are very good engines, WS.

One caveat: Be sure there is a good dealer with a good service department nearby.

It isn't gonna need a lot of service, but when you need it is needs to be there.

Also. . . .get a plug blaster and learn to clean and regap your plugs.

EDIT: Just noticed you are in the DFW area. Stan at Alliance Marine in Roanoke is one of the best Suzi wrenches in the world. They have him evaluate their Service manuals.

It might be worthwhile to ask Stan to take a look at the big Suzi before you commit.

Good luck. :)

If it has been serviced and not neglected in some way it should last many more years.
Has it been used in Saltwater? If Yes for how many seasons?
If Yes and many seasons take that into consideration as how long it might "live" in the future.
Has it carburators or has it Fuel injection?

Very good motors, but like JB said, a sort of sparse dealer network. Even for outboards, parts are VERY expensive.

Thanks for the input guys. I will be going out to the lake lake tomorrow to get a test on the water. I will be as thorough as possible so that I don't get screwed.

Say, WS.

I moved your post without posting a notice and deleted it from where it was. You should have gotten an Email from iboats notifying you of the move.

Did you get the notice?

water_surge,

That motor is an awesome powerplant.... But as others mentioned the service availability is your biggest issue...

I have a neighbor that has this exact engine on a Gambler Bass boat (i think ii is a 19 footer).. Anyway, it will run 82mph with two people in the boat and it "still" had a little left.... Scared me to death...

KCLOST - man I just moved out of Kansas (Paola to be exact)last year, loved it out there.

JB - I got the notice, thanks.

This motor is on a Kingfisher bass boat (19'6"), I had never heard of thsi brand before. Far as I can tell they are no longer in production either :( So I am feeling kind of skittish, but I guess the water trial will let me know more on the performance of both the boat and motor.

Re: Are zusuki motors any good???

water_surge do you mean the motor isn't in production anymore? Suzuki are still building engines and they are great! I had a lowly 25 which went like stink; certainly didn't seem to be rated the same as the Merc 25 that's for sure!
Dealers are important and parts (when you need them that is) are a bit pricey, although that's in the UK so can't comment too much about the US.
Very reliable engine; never let me down.

I meant the boat maker (KingFisher) is no longer in production. So far it sounds like the motor would be good.
I am trying to gauge how fast this setup should run? The boat itself looks very sleek in design. But I know nothing about how fast a boat and motor combination should run just on how it looks. Cause to me an Allison doesn't look like it should be able to run as fast as it does with the motors that are in them.

whoops! Sorry water_surge, didn't have my reading specs on last time !
Yep, amazing how some things look fast and aren't and yet others are incredible.
Don't know Kingfisher boats so can't give even a rough idea of top speed but I'd bet your salary that it won't be a slouch!

Re: Are zusuki motors any good???

Well guys, I went out on a test drive yesterday after work on this newsed boat. I must say, I was really impressed with the performance of this outboard. It was much more quiet than I expected it. I was unable to tell exactly just how jsut it went (the speedo seemed a littel jumpy) but it seemed plenty fast.
I am going to go ahead and buy this rig. Course, now I need to get rid of the 16 footer I have sitting in my driveway. Its a good little boat but its a little boat.
Thanks for the input!!! :)

Re: Are zusuki motors any good???

Ok, I thought I was going to get this boat. But as it turns out the guy does not have the title for the motor, which is mandatory in Texas. I really don't know how he got along with out it. And not only that but when he was handing over all the paper work, I also noticed that the boat and motor where actually 1 year older than he originally claimed. His add read 1990, and they are '89s.
I'm starting to think that I may just need to wait and see if the right baot does actually come along. :(

Hi,
Probably wise to stop there in this case.
There will always be another boat/outboard combination at least as good as this one.
Personally I would probably also look at smaller outboards than the big200+ hp. You might find a good 4-stroke in 115-150 hp range on a nice boat that perhaps meet Your needs and budget.
Like a Suzuki DF115 or DF140, both great outboards that has been on the market for rather many years now and should be available second hand here and there.

Yeah, I'm with Bo on this one: if anything smells fishy about a boat (other than the obvious) then walk away...plenty more boats in the sea.
