Install a standard helm, using teleflex, after a season of fighting the torque generated by my Outboard, I've decided to upgrade to No Feedback helm.

I am trying to uninstall the steering wheel from the helm, but am having trouble taking of the wheel. I've taken off the lock nut and washer, and it appears that there is a woodruff key on the interior side of the wheel where the woodruff key is inserted into the column of the helm. I've tried to pull, push, and pry the darn thing off, but have been unable to. Any help would be great
Thanks

I have a similar setup although I can't say it's the same. Try threading the nut back onto the threaded shaft far enough that the face of the nut is about even with the end of the shaft. Tap the nut / shaft with a hammer while pulling the wheel toward you. Don't hit it real hard, just enough to jolt the shaft and I'll bet the wheel comes loose. If not, hit it a bit harder adding more and more power but not so far as to damage anything. Once it comes loose remove the nut and the wheel and you're in business.

Re: Armwrestling Teleflex Steering

Use a wheel puller or carefully apply heat to the steering wheel coller (not the shaft coming up from the helm).

Re: Armwrestling Teleflex Steering

Feeling steering torque in the wheel is a function of gearcase shape and torque tab position. No Feedback or hydraulic will mask it somewhat but it'll still be there.

If there's torque in the wheel, your gearcase is running offset at speed. That scrubs off speed & efficiency.

Work with your torque tab and skeg to eleminate it. At high X dimensions (motor mounted high) we add a torque tab to the skeg.

Extreme steering torque will still damage a No Feedback helm.

To remove your wheel, screw the nut back on the shaft flush with the top of the shaft. Have a buddy grab the wheel at opposite sides and apply pulling pressure while you give the nut a whack with a hammer. Wheel should pop off. If not, a wheel puller is needed.

Edit: Oops, I missed Terry's post. What he said.

Re: Armwrestling Teleflex Steering

Thanks everyone for the input. I banged on it with the nut while having my dear ole wife pulling and it still didn't come loose. Went to auto parts store and got a gear puller, tried that as well but didn't work. No holes to screw in a steering wheel remover. Gave up and took a hack saw to the back of the helm where the spindle is held in place, sawed it off, and then bang out the spindle. Was hoping to have an extra helm, but it was a lost cause.

Dhadley, I adjusted the little tab under the Cavitation (ventilation?)plate, to compensate but it didn't help all that much last summer.
Is that little tab the "Torque Tab"?

As always, your the best group of guys/gals on any forum!!!

Re: Armwrestling Teleflex Steering

Got to thinking some more on this. Currently the steering wheel turns counter clockwise and I have to push it clockwise to keep the boat going straight.

The little tab is at about 7:00 o'clock if your looking down.

Now I'm think that I have it backwards and it should be set around 5:00 o'clock.

Would that be correct?

Dont think about it, you'll be more confued than I am.

If the steering pulls to port, move the tab to port. If it pull to starboard, move the tab to starboard.

Excuse me, I speak Nautical... Port = Left, Starboard = Right as you are sitting in the boat facing the stem (forward).

What Dhadley says is the right idea, if you want to get the opposite reaction, move the tab the other way.

BTW, iboats.com does not pay me to be an interpreter, I do it pro bono... :D

Re: Armwrestling Teleflex Steering

Thanks, just for clarity, When you say move it to port or starboard, are you talking about the front part of the tab or the rear? I assuming the rear, but would like to confirm.

Thanks again Dadley and Mark

I was doing alot of posting about the same time last year, and from what I remember Mark you were playing around with the idea of a hardtop for you boat. How'd that work out?

They're talking about moving the Rear of the tab,....As you stand behind the boat, facing Forward........

Dhadley, which way should the torque tab be offset before testing a boat with clockwise prop direction? JBD

Re: Armwrestling Teleflex Steering

Thanks Bondo for the clarification. Looks like I did have it set correctly as the boat will go to port. The maximum that I can turn the tab is about 7:00 o' clock. Is there anything else I can do in order to reduce the torque? Would getting a bigger tab work, if one exists? Since I just installed a NFB helm, will that be enough, or will it just break my new helm?

Thanks
