I have been trying to network two computers for the last two days and this is so darn hard.

Win 98 (not second edition) running on both computers. Trying to use Direct cable connection to share one internet connection. I have the two computers sharing drives via DCC, and I have the host connected to the internet, and I have VSOCKS Lite running on the host. I just cant figure out how to get the guest to connect through the host to the internet.

What an un-user friendly experience. I truly believe there is no way possible you could make it any harder.

Network guys, I respect you.

Any suggestions?

Ken

WOOOO WOOOO WOOOOO!!!!

I did it, totally cool.

Got rid of that stupid VSOCKS, and found DcShare 4.2 within 5 minutes of download, I am sharing my internet through the direct cable connection.

Now the wife an I no longer need to fight over the computer.

If you have a cheapo direct cable, you can get all the software and info free on the web, and have two computers share a dial up conection.

Go to www.netfor2.com/DcShare40.html

Ken

Ken,
I'm just being nosey now...
Are you connecting serial or parallel??
The Vsocks would have worked with a bit of configuring ( IP's, protocols etc.) but hardly worth 2 days IMHO.
A 5 port switch and some Cat5 would have been an option too, especially if you ever wanted to add more boxes. Networking hardware has dropped in price so much, it's a joke.
I'm glad you got it sorted out.

As another option, you can connect 2 computers together with cat5 via their ethernet connector. You don't need a hub, switch or anything. You are, however, limited to just 2 computers. Just roll the transmit/receive on one end.

These are old laptops, no ethernet card.

But I always wondered if you could do that. All you need is a ethernet cable and some software?

Ken

Yup, all you'd need are 2 PCMCIA Ethernet cardbus adaptors 10/100 and a Cat5 crossover cable.

Adaptors are really cheap. Fry's has them here:
PCMCIA NIC

I saw these on sale for $5.00 a week ago.

There are tons of these available on Ebay too.

Other sources:

Link

Link

Link

If you have USB ports (probably not), here's another option Link
