Ok as normal what was thought to be a simple floor replacement on my 1987 Astroglass fish and ski 178 has grown. I have two stringers rotted on one side and as I tore into the beast I have found the transom has started to go. After much cussing bleeding and a few sacrificial animals to the gods... :D
I have finally split the seal between the transom and the top shell. Now after much reading and surfing, I am wondering. While I have this thing all the way down should I replace the good stringers with new wood while I am at it? Also after perusing a few of the many epoxy web sites I would like your opinions on whether it is necessary to use roving on the transom replacement or not. A couple of sites say yes and a couple say no you don’t have to with an epoxy repair. I am planning on using 2 layers of 4oz cloth for the new floor and 8oz tape for the stringers, could I do better on my cloth weights. also what is the best way to estimate how much epoxy is needed, I have seen folks throw out the number of oz that a set amount of epoxy will wet out. As usual with the net I have found too much information and I am starting to second guess my self.

Hello ColdFire. I'm in the middle of a resto myself. I would go the whole nine yards while you're in there. That little gremlin in your head head will bug you to no end if you don't.

As far as glass cloth I am using 1708 biax on mine to tie everything together and I am pleased with the results thus far. From reading the many other project chronicles here I think 10 gals. is a pretty good guess for the epoxy.

Like you I was struggling with estimating the amount of epoxy to buy so I bought 6 gals. to start and from that I think I got a pretty good feel for what it will take to finish.

Good luck

That is what I was thinking but you know how easy it is to try to take the shortcut. But with what looks like another good winter storm headed our way, it is a good time to see how much damage I can do :D
