I'm sure that many of us, like myself, discover tricks and short cuts, often by accident, or by trial and error, as we go about our various restorations and repairs. To that end, I thought it might be an idea to create a thread containing our various tips and learned lessons, possibly to help prevent other from making the same mistakes!

Many may be already familiar to our hardened restorers, but it can't do any harm and there's always the chance that they can be improved upon.

Kicking it off, I found that when doing glass and resin work, it's often necessary to put an occasional nip or tuck into your glass mat to help it sit snug into corners or over uneven surfaces. If you do have to do this, leave your scissors open when you lay it down and then it won't stick and set closed, as the resin on it hardens.

When sticking/sealing fittings with Silkaflex or similar, it keeps things tidier if you lay a "mask" of tape around the fitting before pressing it home. This "mask" keeps the squeezed out sealant off the surrounding surface and once dried, it can be trimmed off with a sharp blade and peeled away with the tape. It also helps to only press the fitting home nice and snug, but not fully tight, doing so, only after the sealant has cured or set. This creates a better gasket type seal.
