- Bring along the whole family (maybe not the pets though but keep them in mind during your shopping). The right boat for you is the one that comfortably accommodates all the people you plan to boat with. And the best way to gauge that is wait for it to get em all on the boat together!
- Ask a lot of questions. A representative from the dealership will probably accompany you on the water, so why not pick his or her brain? When you're just starting out as a boater, there's a good deal of new knowledge to absorb and there are no stupid questions.
- Everyone should get comfortable at the helm. No one person will always be driving so everyone (of age) should get used to driving the boat. Operating a boat might seem like driving a car, but there are some pretty big differences. The dealer representative will do some of the driving during you boat demo, but be sure to take the helm for awhile yourself. The salesperson will happily walk you through the basics while supervising the surroundings. You'll be a confident boater in no time.
- Try them all on for size and your type of boating fun. Some models are better suited to fishing, day boating and watersports; others are great for longer cruises and overnight stays. Some firsthand experience, coupled with the expertise of your salesperson, will steer you toward the right boat for the lifestyle you want.
