Hello to all,
I finally got all the parts and tools together to rebuild my 87 era OMC Cobra lower unit. I've got a new reseal kit, forward, reverse, pinion and clutch dog set, new bearings and pinion shims. I was wondering if one of the experienced guys could give me a recommendation on an assembly lube or grease. I'd hate to get this together and burn stuff up on the first trip out. Thanks, Mike

Ayuh,... It's fully submerged in oil, before you even start it,... I wouldn't worry about it...
Besides,... Setting tolerances is easier when it's still Clean...

The OEM service manual tells you what lube to use when and where when reassembling.

Re: Assembly Grease.

I?ll 2nd Don S on the manual.
Been over ten years since I rebuilt Cobras but I remember a couple of things.
Clean Clean Clean everything especially the shift rod ? use emery cloth all the way up to the chicken lips.
Do Not reuse the clutch dog spring unless it is perfect.
Make sure the prop shaft bearing carrier is all the way in before installing the 4 NEW screws.
If you don?t have any needle bearing assembly grease --- do not use any grease ? use gear lube.
Hope you have the shimming fixture for the driveshaft/pinion gear --- height of the pinion gear is very important.
When done make sure everything turns smooth and you have correct backlash in forward and reverse gears.

Good Luck Muc

Re: Assembly Grease.

Thanks for the reply, I did purchase a shimming tool, looks like I need to order a clutch dog spring being as I wouldn't know if it was perfect or not. I do have a factory manual. I believe the drive cratered in the first place by improper shimming of the pinion shaft. When I tore into it a piece of broken shim was in the bottom of the case. This thing only needs to last one season until I can get my duo-prop setup. Thanks again, Mike
