Hello everyone, Johnson 20 1978 model# 20cr78c--took it out today and it runs strong. Not all of the time but twice at high speed I heard a "clunk" coming from the outboard and it felt like I hit something with the boat. What motor problem could I have? By the way, I checked my l/u fluid again after I got home and I do have a seal leak. Something to be working on the next few days. Thanks

Your clunk is probably a worn clutch dog.
Check the dog and gears when you do your
seals.I dont know your motor but on some motors
the shift can be adjusted.

Check and see if you've got any metal particules in the l/u lube when you drain it.

c/6

Hooty

I went through my manual, the shifter did not need adjustment. It was fine as is. Checked out lower unit lube and no metal particles. I'm guessing that even though there are not metal particles the clutch dog is still worn. I'll keep you guys informed. Thanks again

Could it be the prop(the rubber bushing)?

Not sure about it being the prop's rubber bushing. I'm going to start working on it the next couple days and will find out. I guess that is one of the benefits of having 2 outboards, while one is being worked on the other is available for fishing. :D
