Atlas Royal 2A7 Questions

I am new to this site and appreciate any help you can give me!
I bought an Atlas Royal 2A7 about 20 years ago and finally have an opportunity to use it. I have replaced the spark plug & gas lines so far. I was told to empty the lower end gear lube and replace it with new. I took the square plug out but nothing came out.
As you will see by my questions, I am not a motor guy so I apologize in advance.

My questions are:
1. Should I flush the lower end out with something before I refill it with gear lube?
2. How do I refill it? Do I lay it on it's side & how do I know when it is full?
3. There is a square plug above and to the left which I also removed. What is it's purpose? Is it also for gear lube?
4. What is the recommended oil to mix in with the gas these days? It says on the tag to use 1/2 pint of No. 30 oil with each gallon of gas. Is there something better to use?
5. What other maintenance should I perform before starting it up to see if everything is working properly?
Thank You In Advance!
Dave

Re: Atlas Royal 2A7 Questions

1. Nah, just fill it up
2&3. The big (lower) plug in your picture is the fill plug. The vent plug is on the other side, a smaller screw. Position motor in the tilted-up position and squeeze grease into the fill plug till it comes out the vent plug. The third plug, the upper one in your picture is a water flushing plug. Interesting you are calling them square plugs. Originals were screwdriver slotted plugs. Original gear grease is no longer made, Most people use Lubriplate 105 "Motor Assembly Grease" available at NAPA Auto Parts stores. Liquid gear oil will run right out.
4. 1/2 pint of TC-W3 outboard motor oil to a gallon of unleaded regular.
5. See if it will start. If it does, make sure it pumps cooling water. Fix what doesn't work.

Re: Atlas Royal 2A7 Questions

Thank you for your quick response!
Just to make sure, when you say "squeeze grease into the fill plug", that is the lower plug and to use Lubriplate 105 "Motor Assembly Grease". Then leave the third plug, the upper one (water flushing plug) alone (don't fill with anything). Is that correct?

Re: Atlas Royal 2A7 Questions

Correct. The flushing plug is for flushing the cooling system with a garden hose after using the motor in salt water.
