Attack of the SAND!!!!

I recently took my new Sea Ray out to the lake, we thought it would be nice to pull the boat up to an island that had a nice sandy shallow layout. Everything went great until i checked the boat on the trailer later that day. Seems with the ripples in the water the boat moved enough on the beach in order to make the front tip of the haul and the lower half of my stern drive look all faded and have fine scratches from the sand.

What can I do to make it look new again.

if you are going to use the boat. it's the first of many, if you want no scratches leave it on the trailer. try waxing it out.

Get the keelguard, and just remember you will get many many more scratches. Thats the bad part of new boats and cars, is dealing with the first scratch. Now you have that behind you. Put the keel guard on so you can beach worry free, and enjoy your boat instead of stressing. d:) Good luck...

Re: Attack of the SAND!!!!

I find that if you don't stand there and stare at the damage it doesn't look as bad.... d:)

But seriously, it will not stay looking brand spanking new below the rub rails if you use it regular. I have decided to keep the top side and inside looking as possible as possable, and not to worry too much about all the minor nicks, scratches, scuffs, abrasions, bumps, chips, dents, stains, and other imperfections that occur below the rub rails. I keep it clean below the rub rail, and make repairs that are more than just cosmetic.

Otherwise, you will spend more time primping and less time boating!

Re: Attack of the SAND!!!!

Here's a simple solution to beaching a boat say on a island.

1. Take a anchor to the rear of the boat and anchor it (the stern) in place

2. Now take the bow and anchor, attach or what ever you'd like to call it to the island.

3. Result's are as follow's your bow should be floating in 1' of water secured to the shore and you stern is anchored securly in say 4 feet (depends on the slope) to the bottom and your home free.

4. Ummm if wife doesnt like that ( getting her feet wet) you might have to decide which is more precious................8)

Re: Attack of the SAND!!!!

Please don't hijack the thread, Coach. This is Hidust's thread to talk about keel damage from beaching.

Hidust: There are bungee-like anchor lines for doing what Tail Gunner suggests.

Use the bungee for the stern anchor. It will pull the boat clear of the beach/sand/rocks after you disembark, then you simply pull it ashore again when you want to board. Wet feet are not necessary.

Our guides used this system on our recent trip to LOTW and it worked fine for keeping their nice new boats clear of the rocks while shore lunching with dry feet.

If after 1 use you have abraded the sterndrive enough for it to be noticeable, you need to first figure out the basics of running your boat. Making it look new again, not to mention getting it to run again, will be futile until you do. Sam

Re: Attack of the SAND!!!!

A few scratches...my gel coat was gone. Keel Sheild fixed that. Sam makes a point though. I was more concerned about the sterndrive. I hope you know that the drive should be almost up to the trailered position when you are around solid surfaces. I don't know where you boat but ripples are only found in dream waters. My boat gets banged around from cruiser mogels when beached but the outdrive is high and dry.
