Attention Cell Phone Owners.....

This may be old to some, while new to others.

I received an e-mail from a friend today telling me on 1/24/07 our cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies. Shortly afterward, you will be getting sales calls. And yes, the cell phone owner is responsible for the cost of the call. A telemarketer's dream.

To prevent this, you can take either of two actions:

1. call 888-382-1222 (you must call from the cell phone you wish to delete from the list) to be removed from this list. Or go to

http://www.donotcall.gov

from this address you can delite from the list, any cell phone you own.


The good news, it only takes about one minute.

The bad news is it takes over a month for the calls to stop, and you have to renew each year. :|

The good news is the alert is bogus. Check snopes.

From the FTC website(6/21/06):
"As the number of phone numbers on the National Do Not Call (DNC) Registry surpassed 125 million, the Federal Trade Commission today reiterated that despite the claims made in e-mails circulating on the Internet, consumers should not be concerned that their cell phone numbers will be released to telemarketers at any time in the near future. In addition, according to the agency, it is not necessary to register cell phone numbers on the DNC Registry to be protected from most telemarketing calls to cell phones."

guess I shoulda read the whole thread....just went to the national registry and did it on all my phones...yep...did the whole thing....
oh well...life goes on....

I registered as well.

I guess my question then is, if there is to be no concern...why is there a "do not call" list we can register to via www or phone? BTW, both are government entities. It does not make sense.

Have no idea, unless charities are exempt. BTW, the reason for the donotcall list is because of all the telemarketers that swamped the land-lines at supper time. It had little or nothing to do with cell phones. Public pressure finally prevailed

I learned a very simple lesson while struggling through my divorce awhile ago, while the x was giving HER credit card collection callers my cell phone number - if the incoming # is blocked, or if you don't recognize the incoming # - dump the call. Works like a charm
