Hey guys, I had a few messages before but I am still confused. AQ131A w/ 275 stern drive. I took the boat out a few weeks ago and when I put the boat in gear it would jerk and cut off. Same in reverse. The tilt was all the way down. I am not familiar with boats and this is my first and I have only had it for a few months. I took it to a mechanic before this happened and he said everything was fine and it shifted into gear correctly. I am very confused on whats going down. I heard that the 280 was the first trimmable unit. If this is so I believe this is the cause, b/c the foot wasnt all the way down. What makes this worse, the tilt motor went out and its on the way now, no way to test. There is a red light on the dash when the trim is up, I havent put it all the way down to see it goes off b/c the motor problem I had. I just need some idea to move forward. People said it could be the U Joint, but that doesnt make sense, I was under the impression that that is always spinning. I could be wrong. Just an idea. Am I shifting wrong or what, just not sure. First time in control of a boat as well. Sorry I am a virgin when it comes to boats. Thanks guys.

Jeff

The 275 drive did not have trim, only tilt with the "Electro Mechanicanical Lift" as Volvo called it. There is a pin in the bottom of the transom sheild that can be adjusted by moving the pin to one of 3 sets of holes, that is the only trim you have.
There were a few 270's, and possibly some 275's that did have trim, but they had a whole lot of hydraulic "Stuff" inside the boat for the trim, and they also were called 270T or 280T or even 275T. The 280's are a newer design than the 275's.
There is a clutch in the mechanical lift mechanism that will slip when you put the drive in gear and cause it to bang down quickly.
Was the engine dieing when you put it in gear, or was it just the banging you were questioning ?

In forward it wouldn't run in gear after the bang, and would cut off. In reverse it would do the same thing. In some cases it would run for a few seconds after that if I took it out of gear fast enough. But I do not believe I was getting movement forward.

goob982,

I'm not a mechanic but have had a volvo engine for over a decade.

My volvo is just tempermental. Unless I warm it to at least 150 degrees before putting in gear, it will cough, jerk and die. This is especially true if it has not been run in over a month.

Darn thing demands excercise at least once every two weeks. Well, that is what I tell my wife.

Hope it is nothing serious.

Merc, Volvo, Omc it doesn’t matter. If you have a older boat that has more then a few hours on it you will never be able to “just shift it into gear” and expect it to stay running. Maybe after you have been out for awhile but never on a cold start. It takes a little throttle work. Just slight movements to keep the RPM’s up.
As for your Tilt motor. Get to know you local Volvo dealer, you will be seeing him a lot.
Sounds like you need a tilt relay.
You will hearing “knocking” when in gear if you still have the drive in the up position. The drive must be all the way down (red light out) or it will rattle like SOB and it doesn’t have to in gear. The vibration damper is clanging around because you have the U joints at to much of a angle.
