Australian Merc Serial nos

I have a Mercury 50 (Not 500) with 3 pce engine cover Blue band is 2 blues <br />This is pic http://www.myfishingpictures.com/img/003654.jpg <br />It is an Australian motor (Probably only assembled here) and the Serial is 8055985<br />I have had about 4 different ages on it from different sites in c the not very conclusive marinshopen, which seems to go to letters after '81 but nothing certian. The last person to service it says it'a a 1985, but others have said 1978. Surely there must have been a timeframe when they made the 3 pce cover and the 2 tone blue stripes ?? I have searched high and low but there seems to be no certian way of telling.

Andrew<br /><br />I betting it's a 1985 Model, as the numbers on this chart jump from 6586624 for 1985 to A197392 for 1986. I know you've been lookin' hard to verify the year, but I think this is as close as it's gonna get. I don't see any other combination that would refute the 1985 year. Thanks for that.<br /><br />Not that the year matters much.. It's more the condition and history, but sometimes you just wanna know.<br />Because it's an Aussie motor, and we don't really matter down here :-[ maybe our numbers are different. I thought that the wrap around cover would have pinpointed it but no so. I've seen pictures of Mercs on USA sites from the '80's that have a red band but the same as mine. So who knows ???

I think I am the only person in the world who now knows the Aussie merc S/N "Secret". I was looking through my Clymer manual and got to the wiring diagrams section. It makes reference to a USA, Canadian (7's) Aust (8's) European S/Nos.<br />It says "For all motors below 5531630 (USA)or Aust 806???? So our no's below 806???? are the same as USA below 5531630. My motor is 8055??? so it looks to be @1980.<br />Perserverance has paid off. me thinks.
