I'm swapping my 1961 Johnson 40hp to a 1960 Evinrude 40hp. The Johnson had electric start, and automatic choke. I haven't read many good things about the choke. Would I be better off using the non-auto choke carb... just manually choke when starting cold?

electric chokes worked fine in the 70s model motors, not sure if yours is different. you just have to make sure the butterflies are in sync. if you are using a tiller handle use the manual choke, if you are using a console, use the electric. I am not real familiar with those old motors, mainly cause I hate points and distributors with a passion.

You can go either way on that. You can manually operate the automatic choke too, so either way you are manually choking it. However, the automatic one just might work as intended. OR, it may have the infamous fault of over choking during warm-up. Hey, if it does that, simply flip it to the "choke off" position. It is supposed to partially choke during warm-up to prevent all the sneezing that otherwise occurs on a cold motor.

I'll probably go with the auto-choke... good point about not having to use it if it doesn't work correctly. I wish it was the electric choke, though. That works a lot better.. either on or off.

Those old big twins has water operated and air operated auto chokes. The hot water auto choke on my motor had rusted solid. Therefore I used the manual choke for the first start of the day. After that the motor did not need any choking to start instantly.
