I painted my 1965 Evinrude Fastwin over the winter back to as close to original as I could. I sanded bare areas and roughed up the old paint. I then primed it with zinc chromate before applying 2 coats of auto paint. After the paint dried for a week I applied a can of clear coat. I then put a couple of coats of wax on it. My first trip into saltwater produced salt spots all over the leg of the motor. I cant imagine what I did wrong? Whats the difference between car paint and outboard paint? What are your experiences with both?

What do you mean by salt spots? Salt water drops crystalize into white spots when the water evaporates. The white stuff is - - well - - salt. Does it wash off with fresh water?

Re: Auto Paint vs. Outboard Paint

I used regular rattle cans of Acrylic Laquer auto body paint. I had apprehension about using car paint to begin with but read on the forum and other sites that it was pretty much the same stuff as the Tempo brand of outboard paint. I tried washing the deposits off with soap and water unsuccessfuly. I think I may try and sand it lightly and clear coat it again. I dont mind repainting it but I dont know how to avoid this from happening again?

Wash it with "Lime Away" (Wal Mart) and see if that gets it off.
