I have a tiller steer 40hp tohatsu on a jonboat that I'm trying to get the prop just right on. To make a long story short I need to install a temperary tach to measure my wot rpm's. I know they have that "Tiny Tach" on the market but will a regular auto tach work? I have a little tach that was working fine when I took it off of a used car I had bought a few years ago. This tach has a setting for 4, 6, and 8 cyl engines. My tohatsu manual says to set the tach to "6 pole" for my ob, I wonder if that is the same as a 6-cyl 4-stroke?

Will this probably work or am I wasting my time? Has anybody tried this?

Thanks for your help!

Cool, strange though. The reason I say that is because when I look up marine tachs they are the same for outboard and inboard. Maybe these marine tachs have different settings for 2 and 4 stroke.
Seems all a tach does is count a given number of signals as one revolution. Meaning a 6cyl 4-stroke would be the same as a 3-cyl 2-stroke. Can't be that easy though.

O well thanks for the replies! I think it's propped fine the way it is.
