The marine starter is designed to not cause sparks in the bilge that will ignite fuel vapors and make the boat go BOOM!
Always use marine rated electrical parts.

The internals are similar, i.e. field coils, rotor, commutator, brushes, bearings, but the marine unit is sealed much better.

About a hundred buck, but I haven't found anything cheaper that is guaranteed to extend the life of you and your loved ones...

Besides that issue (witch I understand) is there any differences for testing purposes? Is the performance the same?

thanks

Are there marine rated mini starters available? I know with my old car I switched to a mioni starter and the performance was alot better. faster spin less weight, and less juice.

Re: Auto vrs maerine

Well here is my delama, I replaced my starter with a refurb one, started great at the house, got it out on the water, still running fine, start fishing move around to a few spots, lets say started the boat 15-20 times over a 6-7 hour span and go to head back in and all of a sudden the starter makes a clunk and then just spins, like the gear is not engaging the flywheel. I do also have an oil leak on one of the valve covers and it did get a little oil on the starter could this have crapped out the solenoid? Did I just get a bad refurf? I have an auto one I can put in that has a lifetime warentee so if it gets ruined I can swap it out no problem until I find the problem.
It is a mercruiser 5.7 on a 25 ft century, there is no damage to the bendex gear or the flywheel and the flywheel turns by hand with a wrench

thanks

It does but if there is another problem other then it being just a bad starter if I use an auto one and it craps out I can go swap it at the part store because there are so many of that chain in my area and dont have to worry about waiting to get a replacement marine one if that makes sense

I think you got a bad rebuild & you should get a new marine starter.....
When I said to use it for testing, I meant on dry land with the engine hatch open.....
Don't be a fool & use an auto starter on the water, because it is cheaper.....
You might wind up very sorry.......
Don't do it!......;)

This si the exact reason i dont bother with rebuilt anything. Ive gone through so many rebuilt waterpumps starters etc when i was a kid and I swore I woudl only get new parts. yeah they may cost more but its well worth it rather than redoing the job every 2-3 months which is what rebuilt anythign seems to last
