Morning all I have a Volvo Penta 3.0 135hp inboard that the starter is acting up. I have read some of the post and can see how water and corrosion could be a big factor as water is always getting on my starter. My big 10,000 dollar question is I have found a lot of cross indexed parts can be bought at autozone or advanced auto instead of having to order is this the case with a starter for my Volvo Penta 3.0 SX 135hp? Does any one have a part number as I have read the starts are all the same for the years on this motor? :joyous:

It's more than water and corrosion, it's also sparks from a auto starter that can blow up the boat. Only use a marine starter with spark proofing. If AZ or Advance is selling a marine starter, go for it. Also check for a starter rebuilder in your area - Often much cheaper.

Are you sure the starter is beginning to fail? Other things can appear to be a failing starter.

I know NAPA has a marine catalog to order parts. Some stores have limited stock on hand.

I would want to find the root cause of "water is always getting on my starter" so you only need to rebuild/replace this one one more time ;)

Oh yeah, that is a good point missed by reading too fast.

Where is the water coming from?

Don't know about Advance or Auto Zone but NAPA can usually get lots of marine parts pretty quickly; like next day. Usually the NAPA guys don't know they have access to marine parts. But, if you give them a part number they will look it up and say "Oh, what do you know. We can get that."

They can get anything in their marine catalog. Just no help figuring out what you need.

A couple years ago I bought a marine alternator fro a 3.0 mercruiser from AutoZone. They are not place for advice on anything that floats; but the stuff is cheaper and gets there quick.

Leak: a little or a lot?
Get a mirror and a flashlight and go looking.
You might have to really get into it and lay on the motor.
There is a seal at the bottom of the exhaust that can go bad and leak.
That seal is hard to get to and tightening the bolts is almost if not impossible.
Pulling the motor might happen??

Another possibility is a core plug leaking. Could be one in the engine block or the exhaust manifold maybe, dripping down.
