Autolite Starter

The numbers on the starter motor are MDH 4001M 4L. A local shop said it comes up as a 12volt. It should be a 6volt off of a '56 Johnson 30hp. Can anybody tell me what it is 6 or 12 volt? THANKS

may have been a replacement, nothing other than the starter would run off the 12 volt battery.
