automotive coil on '80 merc 470 good enough?

is an automotive coil on '80 merc 470 good enough? trying to troubleshoot a problem of the engine dying after 1/2 hour or so. can't get to the rest of the ignition parts until Saturday, maybe, but I can get the coil tonight and give it a go tomorrow night after work.

I run a auto coil on my 4.3 and it works fine

Gotta love answers like that. Completely different engine and ignition system, but he uses one, so it must be ok for everyone.

I have run an aftermarket auto coil in our '79 V-20 with the 470 for years now with no problem. Just be certain to purchase a 12 VDC EXTERNALLY resistor type coil as your ignition system already has a resistor element (wire). I would encourage the use of insulating boots over the primary connectors to preclude the chance of a spark from a dropped or dislodged object. And be cerain to maintaing the correct polarity of the coil.
