What is the difference between an auto engine rebuild kit and a marine engine rebuild kit? Besides the brass freeze out plugs.I have never rebuilt a marine engine before.I was just wondering if it would work.

Re: automotive engine rebuild kit verses marine kit

This topic has been discussed earlier on these forums, try the search.

Bottom line is, that automotive and marine uses differ in a number of ways hence making the manufacturers change details here and there.

Especially electrics, cooling and fuel systems.

Although some components are still the same, many boaters have tried a direct swap and had problems with performance and much more.

Generally, a DYI conversion ends up in higher price than a 'born' marine engine - especially when you consider the quality.

Hee, hee...What's the matter Tallman? Ya feel this topic has been around the block a time or two already? At least he didn't ask why everyone always bashes Bayliners...

TBONE...

The issue you bring up is a fairly common topic of discussion in here... It's a very good question. What ARE the differences between an automotive and marine inboard engine? Try as UU suggests, and do a search on the topic. If you still have questions...please don't hesitate to ask. I think you'll soon discover there are some varied opinions on this subject. However, once you recognize those who are truly "in the know" re: marine engines vs. those who simply have a strong opinion...I believe you'll be convinced that many, many important differences do exist between the two powerplants.

Walt

Aside from the obvious dollars and cents involved in the cost.....

Check with your local NAPA. Napa sells rebuild kits, pistons, gaskets (darn near everything related) and all listed in the marine book.

There are differances in the bearings and gaskets. Everything is designed for prolonged WOT. Yes freeze plugs are differant too.

Check NAPA , check the web and shop for your best deal. Best way to save money is to do it right the first time.

Bob

You know I had to reply to this one. Don't have a cow, I am not going to start. tbone47129 you will have to do a search on my name to find out my opinion. All I can say is when you have done all your research on what you want to buy. Call (also has a web site) Northern auto parts. Tell them what you want and see how much you save. No disrespect but I have always found NAPA to be over priced.
