I have a 140 HP 1985 Johnson 140 V4J 140TLCO.

If one does a google search for "outboard stand"

Google Search Link

one can find a stand that has a 315 # capacity however, the motor above i hear runs around 350 - 400 lbs.

Question 1:

Have people used the 315 # capacity stand on a larger motor (like mine). Does it seem stable?

Question 2: Besides making your own would a normal cheap automotive stand work if a 2 x 8" block was mounted on it? For example:

I'd like to avoid buying the one on the right. I am concerned though the two cheaper ones would not be tall enough. The 140 motor above appears right around the height of the stand and the center brace may get in the way. The expensive one on the far right would work with a 2 x 8" though.

Question 3: Does anyone have issues with trying to start any of them while on these stands?

I've been more into cars in my life. We'd start motors while on the cherry pickers without reservation. One just had to be careful and not run it long.

Thoughts:

i may just go with the more expensive stand on the right or find someone selling a similar one used. The time to build my own doesn't seem worth it. The engine stand would hold some value. I do give a lot of credit to this guy:

Build your own outboard stand link

Thanks

I just picked up the $109 version yesterday! I will be mounting side by side 2x8 wood to hold the engine (130 hp). When I get it done, I'll post pics.

I Used a 20% off coupon I got on line + gift card a guy was selling on Craigslist for 20% off face value. Made it a great deal! Scott

An automotive engine stand will work to hold an engine for wrench work. I'd never start one on it, though. It'd be a 3 Stooges catastrophe, probably with injuries.

An outboard is designed to mount on a transom that is slanted the opposite way that an engine stand is slanted. I turned the vertical part of my stand around and made an adapter to hold engine, gaining the right bolt pattern and a little height.

My engine is a V6 Mercury.
