Hi there,
I have a 1985 50HP Merc outboard (4 cyl). Can I use an automotive tachometer on it? The tach has capability for 4,6 or 8 cyl (I have it set on 4 cyl) but it doesn't seem to work when connected to the brown wire coming to the console (brown wire is the tach wire according to the Haynes manual).

Any ideas or if it won't work is the tinytach the best solution. Thanks!!

Sorry your tach is not going to work on your two stroke engine.

rascal, The tach wire is connected to the stator. The marine tachometers count the number of pulses the stator makes and correctd for RPM. A lot of Merc Stators are 12 pole. I will guess that is the number of pulses per rev. If you had a setting for a 24 cylinder engine, it might work.
