Automotive temp sensor

Hi there everyone, when I installed my 351 the temp sensor quit working before I ever got it in the water so I installed one for a 351 bronco. I have noticed now that it is in the water that the temp gauge reads around 220 at 3k rpms, and about 250 at WOT (which I then slow back down and it cools down) Last year with the old engine I never noticed any temp problems and the previous owner told me the water pump / impellar was replaced, my question is, is it possible that the automotive temp sensor does don't communicate correctly with the marine gauge, or is it time to replace the water pump?

Yes to your question about the sender, I haven't seen a marine gauge that uses the same sending unit as an automotive piece. Usually they have the same one used in the majority of aftermarket gauges, Autometer, sun, etc. What brand are the gauges?
