New to the forum and just wondered if anybody has had any experience with Avalon pontoons? I currently have a 28ft south bay with a 350 I/O that I'm looking at trading for a 2016 27ft windjammer quad lounger with a merc 300.

Thanks,

Mark

I have been researching pontoons. My opinion based on research is that Bennington is the best, Manitou is the most innovative. Warranties are 5 years.

Many of the issues that may arise will be serviced by the dealer. Do you like the dealer? Do they have a reputation.

The top tier pontoon companies (Premier, Manitou, Godfrey, Bennington, Avalon/Tahoe, Harris, JC, Crest, Cypress Cay, etc) all seem to be similar in warranty, quality, build time, etc. For us the decision came down to what dealer gave us the best deal with the same options and arguably most importantly, who we were most comfortable with. They all call things different things, have different packages, etc so my wife and I made a spreadsheet and had them all build out a boat with as similar of options as possible (ie full third toon instead of express toon, center toon storage, enclosure, flooring, layout, etc).

Then, we compared apples to appless to narrow it down to a couple of pontoons and finally met with each dealer to see what they offer as far as service after sale, what the yearly services cost at their dealership, if they pickup and deliver, what "goodies" come with the boat when they deliver, etc. It's a lot of research but I feel it led us to the best solution for us.

All that being said, I think the Avalon pontoons are well built and their factory stands behind their boats 100%. This was the second choice for us when we got down to our final decision but we went with a different brand. A friend had seats go bad (was a vinyl issue for many manufacturers) and it was close to the end of the warranty so they just sent an entire new front seat set to put on. The best part for him was that the dealer and factory let him keep his boat once the pulled the seats off until the new ones came in.

Thanks for the responses. I shopped the Manitou, but I wasn't impressed with the dealer at all... couldn't ever narrow down a price, didn't have time to call me back, and some other issues that made me nervous. The Avalon dealer is in the same town I live in and to me has more been more upfront and forthcoming with information and pricing. The price he is offering is right at about 25% off the msrp, so that seemed pretty fair to me? The other dealers I have contacted wanted nothing to do with the I/O pontoon, so that has also limited my options.

That's an awesome boat, congrats. You may be low to mid 40's, even though that's a lot of HP, It's a heavy boat. They now offer the bigger (or lower) center tube don't they? If so it will handle great as well. I've heard all good things about Avalon/Tahoe customer service.

Any idea of what top speed will be?

Looking at the Mercury performance bulletins the 27ft Tahoe's and Avalon's I could find were running right around 45. The nice thing about this much HP will be that even with a few people on board you won't have much speed loss like with a smaller HP outboard or smaller toons. That motor should cruise in the high teens and still get over 3 mpg which is where the larger outboards really shine. A friend has a smaller Tahoe/Avalon with a 225HO Etec that will run over 50, but he rarely does. Around 2500 rpm it's starting to plane out good and I swear it makes gas.

Also the Tahoe/Avalon tritoons I have been on seem to really take the rougher water very well and are sturdy boats. You are going to be really happy. Found out a friend bought a pretty similar boat to yours with a 300 etech so I'll find out what speeds he's seeing. You'll be a little slower than the 2 stroke but only a few mph.

I would be happy if I can run mid 40's as I believe that's pretty much where I am at with the other boat. We are on KY lake which can get pretty rough, so I optioned the rough water package which I think will help the ride. I believe the one he quoted the tools are all the same size, but I could be mistaken.

I have had i/o on the last two boats, so I'm glad to hear that the fuel mileage on the outboards is so good. I know there is a big argument between 2 and 4 stroke, but the 4 stroke seems more user friendly to me with lack of having to worry about the oil. I could be wrong on that.

Ron NH... I confirmed that with the wave glider option you do get the 27 center tube with the 25 outer tubes.

Showed up beginning of the week, and got the rear speakers mounted yesterday. Looking forward to some warm weather.
