Hi All,

I have a 1971 Evinrude Fastwin 25HP that has been sitting for 2+ years. I found a very complete thread on here that gave steps on "Awakening a Sleeping Motor" and have followed all of the steps. I have replaced the impeller and checked foot oil, cleaned the carb, checked for spark, and dropped some TCW-3 Oil into the cylinders.

I'm about ready to hook up a gas tank and test her, but I have a question. When the plugs are out of the motor, I can very freely pull the recoil and it will turn over like I am familiar with a motor turning (probably about 3-4 RPMs). If I put the spark plugs back in, I can only turn it over once (one chug of the exhaust) because it is so much harder to pull. I'm not a muscle-head or anything, but I am a healthy 6'3'' 200 pound 32 year old, so I'm pretty sure I should be capable of doing this.

Is this normal? Is one RPM enough to get it to catch or do I have an internal problem?

Lord, please help me not to respond to that question! Sorry, now to get serious, you are feeling the compression strokes. You certainly ought to be able to spin it over more than one stroke at a time. Yes, it can be started one stroke at a time, but it is not practical to expect it. Haul on that rope and follow through. Hopefully, the motor is bolted down as it would be on a boat.

That's normal...will build up your arm. If it gets tiresome, check the edge of the flywheel for a notch/groove. You can take the recoil starter off and rope start it with a knotted rope using the notch, get better leverage for pull starting this way. It's hard to pull cause the engine is cold, after it runs awhile it restart easily.

Yes they do. Try eBay or one of the used outboard dealers. Just don't hold your breath until you find the factory harness from motor to the key switch. It took me 2 years of looking before I found one on eBay. They are not in production any longer, and they usually went with the boat.
Probably be easier to find a donor motor, and then you will have plenty of spare parts, too
