Greetings all,

I usually spend all of my time in the outboard engine trouble section....but now that they all have fixed me up I have a paint issue to discuss.

I usually paint the deck of my boat with cheapo laytex deck enamal. Problem is it never sticks to the polyurathane resin over the plywood deck. I was considering upgrading to a more expensive topside paint or 2 part awlgrip/paint product.

Question is....will a 2 part paint go over a laytex? Will it adhere to the resin where exposed? Is it worth the extra $$? Will it just peel up every year like the laytex?

I know I blew it using the laytex years back but most of it is still down except where the water collects. Any "e"pinions out there on what to put on a deck?

Let me know and I will be a paintin fool!

The Hermit---Cape Cod USA

Re: AWL-grip-topside paint-what to use

Hi thehermit
I just finished painting my boat using Interlux Brightside Polyurethane and was very pleased with the product. This a single part Poly which I opted for because my boat will be used in fresh water. For salt water environment the 2 part is probably the way to go. As for your question about the latex, generally speaking, where it is not a problem the poly should go over it OK. Ideally you should strip the latex off but this is not always feasible. By trade I am a furniture restorer but have painted cars, boats, houses etc. Of course, you know, the prep work is where the job is, the painting is the easy part. A brisk sanding will reveal any areas of the latex that might be a problem. Make sure what you paint over is tight. Also I would talk to Awlgrip or whomever about a possible primer. I painted over fiberglass with Interlux's recommended primer then three coats of Poly.
