Hello, just wondering if anyone can help
I have an old trailer with hadco 440 hubs they are 10'' electric brakes
after doing a google search found they are from an old airstream trailer:confused:
What i want to know is anyone ever replace the axle, bearings and hubs? the brake assembly i put on is a few years old and the tires and rims are one year old
so my parts should swap over, just looking at where to get it done in my area without getting hosed
I live in vancouver canada

Re: axle swap advise?

I am trying to figure out why you want to change out the axel, bearings and hubs but want to keep the brakes and tires to put on the new assembly.

Axels- generaly will only have one of two common problems, bent or a damaged spindal, I have never heard of an axel wearing out.

Hubs- broken lug but the hub can wear out because of the brakes

Bearings- these can go south even when greased properly (bearings set to tight or loose).

I am thinking you are more interested in making sure you wont have a problem by updateing your running gear.

This will work if all the work that is done is done properly but as long as the axel (not bent, hub (within tolerances)and bearings( not blue, pitted or out of round) you can just clean, repack the bearings and still walk away with the feeling you should not have a problem.

Which everway you choose to go the best thing to do is check your trailer over before you leave your yard. 5 minutes at home can save hours on the road.

Not being able to get parts readily is a good reason to change out/update.

Is it just the studs which is giving you a concern?

Are yours the screw in type or pressed in? There site shows them as a screw in but you give the impression are a press in type.

Is there a particular part are you in need of?

Re: axle swap advise?

hey
jusfloatin
the studs are press in kind
six robleess in seatlle is calling hadco for me so i will find out this morning how much a hub costs. the last replacement stud i put in was tight, then it spins with nothing to stop it. couldnt get the nut off and i had to get it cut off with a torch.
also the other problem is the inside seals get chewed up so im asking them for new z rings, they are what the seals ride on
as you can imagine it would be great to get some new gear

The stud problem would be an easy fix. ( small quick tack weld to the bolt head and hub)

The seal problem, are you able to get a picture of the seal or a link that shows what type of seal is needed or required.

In Calgary we have a outfit called Standens
http://www.standens.com/3500axle.pdf
which makes the axels and you can get a complete assembly built to suit with brakes for under $400.

Re: axle swap advise?

Brand new complete axle assemblys are pretty cheap vs buying individual parts. Bought mine for $120, not including electric breaks.

Re: axle swap advise?

Bought mine at ABCtrailerparts.com The guy was grumpy but great, super helpful, and shipped it to MN in 3 days. I know Northern Tool and Tractor Supply have them. When my axle blew up I couldn't believe how much easier and cheaper it was to just buy a new one vs buying parts to fix the old one....plus welding isn't cheap! Only takes 8 bolts to replace the axle, and for another $20 I got new springs too.

Re: axle swap advise?

Some new developments thought you guys might like to know
I put in a craigslist ad and sold the trailer because someone came along and paid me asking price $1500 the trailer came with the boat when I bought it 6 years ago, he plans to put his boat on it and sell them both.
I looked at a few used trailers for about 4000 but they were set up for speedboats
ended up ordering a brand new roadrunner made localy here, for $4082 that's including 12% tax!
It has rollers up front and bunks for the stern galvanized surge brakes and they are making it set up for my boat.
I have to give them a measurement so they can adjust the bunks
Pick it up wed

Sounds great, start new and fresh! Hope it works out well. 12% tax...I'd say ouch except we're catching up to that pretty quick down here.

Re: axle swap advise?

ya ouch is right!
we have pst, gst, hst, it never ends i tell ya.
so got the trailer , first thing i noticed is that it's longer and the boat can launch normally like everyone else! i used to have to power on and off
now dont get me wrong i like the fact that if you let go the cable she just slides off but
i launch alone.
so whe i loaded it because we dont have a dock i cant climb down because
when i get to the bow stop she just slides back i got down but it was not easy
im thinking next time i will not sink it as deep see how that goes
