Hello 2000 Bayliner Capri 2152 expert in cyberspace...

Intermittent problem with shifting. Took boat out and ran perfect; returned to docks and fueled boat. Started boat right AFTER REFUELING and heard VERY loud grinding noise when in neutral. Ran boat but problem persisted. Returned to marina and explained to mechanic. He later reported that he found no problem but did replace stern drive fluid. Took boat out again another day and ran perfect, start to finish, but I did not refuel. Took boat out again yesterday and ran for about an hour; everything ran and sounded absolutely perfect. Then returned to dock for refueling, even gracefully backed boat to dock, occasionally going into neutral with everything normal. Boat was refuled, and then I cranked up engine immediately AFTER REFUELING and the VERY loud grinding noise problem in neutral was back. Only way to stop it was to pull the shift/throttle lever back way into the reverse zone, almost engaging reverse gear. I then ran boat on lake for a bit, and returned to marina with the noise problem still there. Shut engine down for about three minutes; then I restarted engine only to find that problem had again vanished. Could it be that the throttle/shift cable has slipped down a bit between the hull and the gas tank, causing the cable to bind or be stressed when the tank is filled? FYI: This problem is VERY embarssing at the docks... Any insights or clues you can provide would be GREATLY appreciated.

Many thanks,

John Liburdi
