BAAADDDD Floor!

I just fell into a 1993 VIP Vision 1760 for next to nothing. The prev. owner did little up keep, but the motor and drive are like new and run great and the outside is perfect. She sat uncovered for years. My wife is tackling the vinyl work, and I am stuck with the task of tearing out the floor from the windsheild to the motor. I have started cutting slowly and as it looks now I will need to be replacing the spars also. My question in what type of plywood is the best to use besides "marine grade". I will be covering everything with a layer of fiberglass cloth and polyester resin. Also I was curious as to how much coverage you get from 1 gal of resin and how thick of plywood I should go with, it has 1/2 standared looking ply in it now. There is also a foam that was poured in to the outer compartments, is it nessary for me to replace this? I may have to pry it up to glass in the spars and then glue it back on. Thanks, any help would be great.

Welcome to the madness..

That foam is poured into the boat...You do not "have" to replace it..It is up to you. Whatever you do I would not attempt to reuse it in any way.
Straight to the dmpster is where it needs to go.
You will be amazed at how heavy that waterlogged foam is going to be..

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

No kidding about the foam. Super heavy. Just ordered 25yds of fiberglass mat, 2 gal of poly resin, and 8cu' of 2lb foam from US Composites. Great co., and I have had good results with their products in the past. I have gone thru many threads in the last day about how you should lay the deck stringers and I am just as confused as when I started. Let it be knowen that I don't have mine out yet. Do you need a insulator between the hull and stringer or is it there to fill inperfections? Also what is this "PL" stuff you use to glue the stringers down with? I will be fully glassing in the stringers and deck material. My boat is only 18'. Thanks:)

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

I just got all the floor and foam out to the front wall where your feet rest and the pass thru to the bow. The wood all the way up is rotted and I am unsure of the stringer condition. What is the best way to remove the deck that is under the fiberglass floor and seats in the bow section? It sits very tight to the plywood deck.

Welcome Bosshossmc,
Best way is to remove the cap, actually the only way to truly fix it. You can search cap removal, basically it's removing the rub rail insert & trim, removing tons of rivits &/or screws/staples holding the two halves together, then lifting the cap completely off and setting aside.

Yes on the stringers, the fill is for imperfections and to asure no 'hard spots' where the stringers and hull might meet{bad thing}...pl is a construction adhesive, look for it where the liquid nails etc are shelved PL Premium I believe it's called.

You will need to remove the top cap and to do that you will have to take off the rub rail and remove the screws fastening it to the hull. I would definitely check the transom as rot is like a termite once it starts it will go completely through a boat if not caught early. Good luck and look at some of the other work that has been done here. Everyone here is very helpful and they do amazing work.

Yea..should be fine. I noticed you only purchased 2 gallons of Poly, with 25yrds of mat. You are obvioulsy going to need ALOT more resin to do the project...if you go to fiberglasssite.com they have a calculator that will give you an idea of Resin coverage on the various types of glass you may use for the project.

Yes it is ok to walk on the hull once the floor is removed-it wont hurt anything.
Also, as said before, you need to remove the cap to replace the floor in the bow as you decscribed. This wil give you tons more working room and it will also give you access to the top of the transom to determine if it needs to be replaced. I, along with many others documented the removal of the cap through words and pics. The link to my thread illustrationg this is in my signature...
Also, you will definitely need more than 2 gal of poly to do your floor. My 16 ft. 'Twain took nearly 4 gal on the floor and I used a single layer of 1.5 oz CSM. (it really soaks it up)
Good luck on the build!

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

Yeah I figured I would need more poly. I got a deal on the 25 yds of glass, hope I don't need it all. I have been taking photos as I go, just need to get the into this computer thing. Much harder for me to do that than rebuilding a boat. Does the trailer povide the right kind of support for the boat when the floor and stringers are out?

Well I'm hoping from all my research that this is somewhat close to how thigs are to work. if not please feel free to scold me and shot me in the right direction. There will be more that one layer of glass on the stringers as the pic only shows one coat. Thanks

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

Split the boat today, not as bad as I thought. Upper is alot heavier than I thought. The more help the merrier. As usual I was 1 man shot so my 9 year old daughter stepped in and drove the 4 wheeler with the boat in tow after we lifted the top up. Now time to dig in. Any comments on my drawing on how to glass in a stringer???

Yes you are definitely making progress! I can't help you with the stringer questions, as mine didn't need to be replaced.
Good luck!

Re: BAAADDDD Floor!

I just removed the first 5' of stringer on the starboard side, bow section. The stringers were set into a glass channel 3/4" wide and about 1" deep. Thay were hard to the bottom, no foam or softeners. I will try to get a pic up soon.
